What if the men of Pride and Prejudice refused to take 'no' for an answer? In Jane Austen's original tale, Mr Bingley accepts 'no' from Mr Darcy about Jane; Mr Collins accepts 'no' from Mrs Bennet about Jane; Mr Wickham and Colonel Fitzwilliam are stopped from showing more interest in Elizabeth by lack of fortune; and of course, Mr Darcy accepts 'no' from Elizabeth at Hunsford. This variation looks at what might have happened, had those events gone differently, and, as the title suggests, what the reason behind some of the changes might have been. Could Jane turn down Mr Collins? What if Wickham had proposed to Elizabeth before she knew his character? And could anyone resist Colonel Fitzwilliam, had he been in possession of a good fortune?

This story follows the original, more or less, and does not contain any material of an explicit adult nature.

There's lots to love about this book. The unique storyline of the entail on Longbourn is the catalyst for a lot of what happens in this story. It gives another sort of explanation to Mr. Collins seeking a bride from the Bennet daughters. The story manages to even intertwine Wickham and vilify him more than we could've imagined.

But then, there's a lot to be frustrated about in this story... and now I will include my SPOILER alert

Lizzy has a grand total of four proposals in this story. The first being Collins after he failed to secure Jane in spectacular fashion (Bingley was easily a favorite in this story). Then oh my Lord, here comes Wickham proposing to Lizzy, and worse, her accepting him. Ugh!!! Luckily, Mr. Bennet is to be commended for being smarter than his daughter here.

Proposal number three is Darcy, and while not as intense as canon, he still gets rejected. And now comes the source of my other big frustration. As if Wickham wasn't bad enough, now Richard, Colonel Fitzwilliam, proposes to her too?! Wth?! This after his circumstances change and leave him in a position of higher eligibility. But Lizzy at this point regrets refusing Darcy and so refuses Richard.

I would think Richard would get over this quickly but the author harps on his disappointment until the very end. I'm skipping ahead but I literally just switched from 5 stars to 4 stars because the last line of the story 1) tells us Richard takes a while to get over her (if he does ever) and 2) leaves it at that. Seriously? If that's going to be the extent of it (the last paragraph of the story was a quick mention of Richard), why bother including it? Go big or go home I would think. Have him marry Kitty or something. But yeah, that was a letdown.

I loved the action (especially towards the end), the passion and romance between Lizzy and Darcy, and the evidence of wit between the two. I loved Mrs. Bennet gifting us with part of Lady Catherine's speech from canon (the one directed at Lizzy). I was laughing at how the author weaved it in and still managed to include Lady Catherine in the scene. Very clever!

But as mentioned before, I deducted a star for the ending, the fact that we never did find out how Collins took the news of the will at the end, and the author's seeming obsession with Richard as a potential husband for Lizzy. I love Richard, but not so much I like this type of storyline. I've read stories where she's engaged/married to him or Wickham, and I regret reading them honestly. And it's a personal preference but I saw this author dedicated a series to this particular storyline. Yeah, unfortunately, I won't be reading it. I don't mind angst, but that kind of separation between my favorite literary couple isn't my idea of a good read. Sorry.

I'm glad Lizzy and Darcy had their love evolve here, and that's what I look forward to seeing in any story from JAFF. So despite my critique I would definitely read this again. But I can't see myself reading her other stories.

Great variation from Pride & Prejudice. Lydia and Wickhams story was better than the original book. Loved Mary's change in character.
Story moves fast. In character ) characters. I nice read. If you like pp da fiction then you might like this variation too )
This is a good variation and wonderful story . I enjoyed my favorite characters and the Colonel Fitzwilliam's interest in Lizzy.
I borrowed this through my Unlimited subscription and enjoyed this so much I bought it. Excellent writing with an engaging storyline and the "argument" between Lady Catherine and Mrs Bennet is priceless. Will definitely be reading other P&P variations written by this author. Well done!
This is a delightful alternate telling of Mr. D'Arcy and Elizabeth Bennet's love story. The original cast is all here, and drawn just slightly off character to add an interesting depth to the story.
I will admit whole-heartedly, that I am a Jane Austen addict. After reading 'Pride and Prejudice,' all I wanted was more Elizabeth and Darcy. I have been reading JAFF fiction for a while and have often read JAFF that was truly horrid.
You can imagine my delighted surprise to read a JAFF author who was unpublished before and who is immensely talented.
Usually, an author's first work shows growing pains and occasionally promise. This work by Carolyn exceeded every expectation I had.
All of the Pride and Prejudice characters were true to the original, the regency setting seemed true, the plotline within the bounds of not only the probable, but also cleverly done. Back to her characterizations, so many JAFF authors give you flat characters that seem closer to 1940's movies than real life. Her characters lived and breathed.
I enjoyed this stories many twists and turns immensely, enjoyed the dialogue--indeed every aspect of the tale. I am now looking forward to many other works by this quintessential author!
Very good story about cheating and deception. The interconnection of characters in this story were amazing, but unfortunately too many of them were conniving men who thought only of themselves. Collins and Wickham compete for first place for wicked, evil people in this story and both deserve the consequences they received. Worried for Darcy in this story, but finally Elizabeth gets her head and heart where they truly belong.
